Athletics Updates

Mr. Ruben Dunnink, Athletics Director
This year in athletics has been busy and fun, but it has also come with its challenges. The first month of school was a bit tough as we were waiting for the gym floor renovations to finish, but finally, in the first week of October, the gym opened again, and our sports season continued as normal.
Here are some highlights written by some of our students who were involved in playing, coaching, and helping out with athletics events:

Girls Basketball

“The girls' basketball team this year started off pretty shakily as we just had enough players on the team to allow us to compete in our first official game, where we lost by 45 points. This game was a win for us despite the large gap since it was our first game together as a team this year. We learned how well we support each other on the court, and what we need to improve on. Many games later, slowly improving, we earned our first win in the first home game of the season, with a score of 46-21. Unfortunately, our season was cut short when some of our teammates were injured and unable to play, leaving us short on players, but the problems we faced and our dedication to overcome them will let us come back even stronger next year.” - Maame N.

New Gym Floor

“I can only describe the gym reopening in one way:  During the month the gym wasn’t open for students to use, every day symbolized a boring night with no friends to talk to. After the reopening of the gym, life was renewed as new and old faces were seen day and night laughing, sweating, and shouting in the gym. To this day I will treasure our gym floor and appreciate NCC’s hard work to get it rebuilt.” - Tomiwa O.

Boys Volleyball

“This was my first year playing organized volleyball and it was extremely fun! I have learned lots about the game and have gotten to enjoy expanding my athletic experience with a new sport. Going to tournaments with the team is very fun and it's amazing to see our progress game to game. I am thankful for my coach giving up her time to coach us and I will definitely be playing more volleyball in the future.” - Finn C.

Athletic Leadership Team

"From being on the athletics leadership team this year, I gained knowledge on how to officiate a basketball game by keeping scores. This improved my attentiveness and focus, as I had to constantly keep track of who scored how many points, who and how many fouls were called, how many timeouts were called, and who had jump ball possession. I also got some coaching experience by coaching the middle school soccer team, which taught me a lot about leadership and communication.” - Oritse-Tsemaye E.

Cross-Country

“This year’s cross-country season was one of the best in recent years simply because of the amazing fall weather we’ve had. All of our meets were held on days when it was sunny and we could enjoy the full spectrum of the fall colours. It was also a great season because all 5 of the runners on the team reached personal bests throughout the season, with 3 of our runners even moving on to SOSSA. Overall it was a great season and we thank God for it.” - David Barajas T.

Tennis

“I had the opportunity to participate in my first organized tennis tournament this year. I was nervous and ecstatic going into the zone competition, but I remained confident in my abilities. I wasn't expecting to, but I won the zone! It was a wonderful accomplishment and an amazing feat to accomplish for the first time. However as I entered SOSSA, nervousness took over, and I faced a difficult defeat. I will always be thankful to NCC for giving me the opportunity to compete at this level, even though I would have loved to go on to OFSAA. I took away three key lessons from this experience: Even a small amount of practice makes a significant impact; while confidence is crucial, having too much of it may hamper your ability to navigate situations; and approaching situations with the attitude of having fun and learning makes the memory irreplaceable.” - Orafiri I.
