Mr. and Mrs. Derek & Stephanie McGaghey, NCC Parents
An interview with two of our local parents, Mr. and Mrs. McGaghey!
How did you learn about NCC and what makes it a school of choice for your child?
We initially heard about NCC through a family at our church. Our son was not thriving in the public school system, and we were curious about alternative education options. Even before hearing about NCC we had prayed to God to show us what we needed to do. As we looked further at private schools in the area, God placed NCC on our hearts and minds. God confirmed that NCC was where our son was to attend first and foremost because of NCC’s Christian values, and then additionally because of the small class sizes and resources they were able to offer our son. We strongly believe NCC offers a nurturing educational and spiritually rich atmosphere for students to thrive.
What has been your experience with the teachers at NCC and feeling connected to the classroom?
NCC utilizes the Edsby digital platform to connect us and our son with teachers. Edsby allows us
to see upcoming assignments and current grade percentages. In our experience the teachers
communicate effectively and they genuinely care about the students. The teachers’ dedication to
excellence has helped our son achieve higher grades and maintain accountability for his work.
What unique learning experiences have benefited your child?
In middle school, NCC offered project-based learning which allowed our son hands-on learning
opportunities. These experiences allowed our son to grasp concepts better through real-life
applications. NCC also offers a variety of field trips which reinforce classroom lessons in practical ways. Annual class retreats at the beginning of the year have helped our son build relationships and
has been an opportunity to further build his character.
What does NCC do to support students with their academic pathway and post secondary
preparedness?
NCC offers a variety of support to prepare students for post-secondary education and offers additional after-school math and English programs to reinforce classroom teachings. The school also partners with post-secondary institutions to understand the expectations for future students. This collaboration allows teachers to actively equip students in advance. As a result, students are well-prepared for college or university.
Could you speak to the co-curricular opportunities that have helped to round out your child's experience at NCC?
Our son has enjoyed many co-curricular opportunities beyond the classroom. He has a
servant’s heart and offers his skills and abilities every week on the sound board during chapel.
Our son has also been part of the track and field team for several years, running in the boys 100
meter relay, participating in javelin, and supporting fellow team mates in their respected events.
He also had the opportunity to travel to England and Paris for 10 days during March break. This
trip sparked a love for travel.
Is there anything else you would like to highlight?
- The staff make personal connections, creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
- NCC’s diverse cultural exposure through the international students and cultural celebrations enriches our son’s experience and broadens his global perspective.
- Our son loves the historical campus because of its unique architecture, the ability to move around between classes and connect with nature.
- Bus rides with friendly bus drivers make his daily commute something he looks forward to. He has made meaningful relationships with all his bus drivers over the past 6 years.
