Simon Tang '91

Simon Tang from the Class of 1991 talks about how he recently was reconnected to NCC and encourages other alumni to rekindle their connections with eachother and with NCC.
Can you share a little bit about your history with the school?
“I attended NCC from 1987-1991. I met my wife at NCC when she was a student from 1988-1991. NCC has always been a special place for us and we have so much memories there. The NCC student community shares a strong bond during, and beyond our times at NCC. I remember many fond moments while I was a student there: after supper (5:30pm at the time), we had to wait until 6pm before we can play at the gym, planning and participating various events (the Chinese Christian Fellowship, organizing the Chinese New Year Banquet), deciding how to spend the $5 that was handed out by the Clive Ollies at Heritage Day, learning how to drive manual/stick shift in a fellow roommate's car (Thanks again V.Ho), getting a 99% in Mr. Lebold's physics test because I miscalculated 1+2+1=3....and so much more.“

How did you become re-engaged/involved with the school over these last few months?
“Jeanette M. invited Karen and I to join an alumni celebration committee on July 2, 2024. During that time we found out the high level situation the school was in. During that weekend, Karen and I were debating what we should do - if we do nothing, the school will be forced to accept a less than favorable deal to sell our campus. We know we will regret 20 years later if we don't do/say anything, so we decided to act.”

How did you reconnect with alumni during this time?
“Couldn't have done it without Jeanette and many others’ help to spread the words around. NCC is a special place for many alumni. I had many one-on-one calls with my fellow alumni, and I always open with ‘NCC needs your help’.”

In what ways would you like to see alumni continue to get involved at NCC?
“This is not NCC's first crisis. Alumni should be united, see past our differences and work together towards a brighter, better, NCC. To borrow from JFK: ‘Ask not what NCC can do for you...ask what you can do for NCC’.”

How do you see NCC students benefiting from alumni involvement?
“If anything, we want the students and parents to know that alumni do care about the school, and we want the best for the students. After all, the students will soon become alumni and join the big family of NCC alumni.”

Are there special plans for the school in the future?
“To continue to change life, one student at a time. Perhaps bring back Heritage Day?”

How would you describe the last two months?
“The last two months (July-Aug, 2024) have been challenging and fun. Challenging due to the vast amount of work that needs to be done while meeting a very, very tight timeline. Fun because many alumni, many of whom I've never met, were all working towards the same goal. Working with so many bright people was amazing.”

How do you feel about being connected to your alma mater again? Has this been a significant experience?
“It feels amazing. The campus may have changed since the time when I was there, but the spirit remains. It is the people that make NCC special. I feel that the Lord has used the past two months to break many, many barriers among alumni.”
