Our Trip to Stratford: Wendy and Peter Pan

Mrs. Holly Krys, MS Teacher
On Thursday, October 3, the Gr. 7/8 class was able to join with high school students on a field trip to the Stratford Festival.
We had been reading the novel Peter Pan throughout the month of September, so we were excited to see how it compared to the play Wendy and Peter Pan. Our experience began with an interactive session with some of the actors. They gave us a look at some of the “behind the scenes” activities that occur when giving a live performance. They answered questions, and even led the students through some dramatic exercises.

The play itself was entertaining from beginning to end. The students were engaged throughout the performance, and enjoyed looking for the “tricks” they had learned about earlier. There were several differences between the novel and the play, which brought a freshness to the story. Back in class, we were able to spend time comparing the different versions and reflecting on which one we preferred.
Despite the long drive, we really enjoyed this experience and would recommend it to others who may be thinking about going.

What the Students Had to Say:

"I enjoyed visiting Stratford to see the play Wendy and Peter Pan because we were able to join the workshop and meet the actors. I also liked eating lunch by the river and visiting the shops. I learned that it takes a lot of practice to act out a small moment in the play. For example for a short flying scene they spent about a week practicing. I would recommend this trip to others because of the amazing performances and the kind staff." - Baz

"Our trip to Peter Pan was amazing. One thing I personally enjoyed was the meet and greet with the actors and learning their tricks that happen on and off stage. I learned that in theater Peter Pan is usually played by a woman. I also learned that Wendy has 3 brothers Michael, John and Tom. I would definitely recommend the trip to Stratford to others because it was an amazing experience from meeting the actors to walking around town to seeing people fly. In conclusion to this I think the Peter Pan trip was an amazing experience and if there are more experiences like this I would definitely recommend it for my family and friends and also me." - Sydnee
